The best flooring for a bathroom
Bathroom floors rarely fail from a flood. They fail from years of humidity working into a seam. That is the test worth applying, and it rules out more flooring than most buying guides admit.
The bathroom problem, stated properly
A bathroom is the one room where the floor is asked to survive standing water, constant humidity and bare wet feet at the same time. Most flooring that fails in a bathroom does not fail from a flood. It fails from years of humidity working into a seam or an edge.
That is why the useful question is not whether a floor is “waterproof” but what happens at its weakest point — the joints, the perimeter and whatever is underneath.

Tile is the technically perfect answer and always has been. LVP wins on everything around the edges of that: it is warmer to stand on, quieter, far cheaper to install, forgiving of a dropped bottle, and it does not need grout maintained. In a family bathroom those add up.
Is LVP good for bathrooms?
Yes, and it is what we would put in our own. The core of a rigid vinyl plank is not water-absorbent, so unlike laminate or engineered wood it does not swell if water sits on it. A plank left in a puddle overnight is fine.
The honest caveat is that a floating floor is water-resistant as an assembly, not a waterproof membrane. Water that gets past the perimeter sits on the subfloor underneath, where it can cause problems the floor itself never would. That is a sealing job, not a flooring one, and it is worth doing properly.
What to specify
- A 20 mil wear layer or better. Bathrooms see grit, and the wear layer is the only thing between the print film and it. We stock up to 22 mil.
- Rigid SPC core rather than a flexible plank, so it stays dimensionally stable through humidity swings.
- A matte or textured finish. Wet feet on a high-gloss floor is the one genuine safety issue in a bathroom.
- Silicone at the perimeter, under the trim. The expansion gap still gets covered rather than filled, but a bead of silicone behind the base shoe at the tub and toilet keeps splash out of the gap.
Fitting it in a bathroom
- Around the toilet. Pull the toilet rather than cutting around it. Cutting around a toilet base is visible forever and traps water at exactly the point you least want it.
- At the tub or shower. Keep the expansion gap, then silicone the joint behind the trim.
- Under the vanity. Run up to it, not under it, the same as kitchen cabinets.
- Underfloor heating. Most rigid core plank is compatible up to about 27 °C surface temperature. Check the specific floor and bring the heat up slowly over several days.

Yes. The rigid core does not absorb water, so unlike laminate or engineered wood it will not swell if water sits on it, and it is warmer and quieter underfoot than tile at a fraction of the installed cost. Specify a 20 mil or better wear layer and a matte finish, and silicone the perimeter behind the trim.
Porcelain tile is the best in absolute terms and always will be. Luxury vinyl plank is the better practical choice for most family bathrooms: the core is unaffected by water, it is warm and quiet underfoot, it costs far less to install, and there is no grout to maintain.
The plank itself is unaffected — a spill left overnight does no harm. What needs care is the perimeter, because a floating floor is water-resistant as an assembly rather than a sealed membrane. Silicone behind the base shoe at the tub and toilet keeps water out of the expansion gap.
Pull the toilet, run the floor underneath, and reset it on a new wax ring. Cutting around the base leaves a visible line and traps water in the cut at the worst possible place.
It matters more than most people plan for. Choose a matte or textured finish rather than high gloss — wet feet on a glossy floor is the one real safety issue in a bathroom, and texture costs nothing extra.
No. Inside a shower enclosure needs a tanked, tiled assembly with a proper membrane and fall to a drain. LVP is for the bathroom floor outside the enclosure.
